Seafood Hub Development on the U.S. West Coast
This report by Ariadne Reynolds of the UCLA Institute of Environment & Sustainability, prepared for the NOAA National Working Waterfront Network (Spring 2024), examines the emerging concept of “seafood hubs” on the U.S. West Coast — aggregation and distribution models adapted from agricultural food hubs to help local and regional fishermen compete against a seafood trade deficit that reached $20.3 billion in 2023.
The report reviews existing definitions of food/seafood hubs, surveys current seafood hub efforts, and includes a case study of the Oregon Ocean Cluster Initiative as a model for rebuilding local seafood processing and distribution infrastructure along working waterfronts.
