This 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment for Monterey County, prepared by PRC Custom Research and sponsored by the Monterey County Health Needs Collaborative (including the County of Monterey Health Department, Montage Health, Natividad, Salinas Valley Health, United Way Monterey County, CSUMB, and the Central California Alliance for Health), documents health status, social determinants of health, and community-identified priorities across the county.
Food access is highlighted as a key social determinant: USDA data show that 16.6% of the Monterey County population — over 69,000 residents — have low food access, meaning they do not live near a supermarket or large grocery store, a rate higher than the California average. The report also covers food insecurity, poverty, housing, employment, mental health, chronic disease, and other findings relevant to food systems and public health planning in the region.
