Fisheries of the Middle: Building Collaborations Between Seafood and Agriculture
This peer-reviewed opinion article, published in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems (January 2026) by Laurie Richmond and co-authors, proposes a research and advocacy agenda for “fisheries of the middle” (FOTM) — fishing operations too large or otherwise unsuited for direct markets, but unable to fully participate in long, commodity-based supply chains. Drawing parallels to the “agriculture of the middle” movement, the authors argue that mid-scale fisheries need auxiliary aggregation, processing, storage, and distribution infrastructure to reach consumers while preserving their place-based, community connections. Though oriented around the California context, the piece speaks to challenges and potential solutions relevant across the U.S. and beyond.
