Equitable Access to Healthy and Local Food in Marin County
This October 2015 preliminary report from the Marin Food Policy Council (MFPC) presents policy priorities to the Marin County Board of Supervisors for improving equitable access to healthy and local food. MFPC brings together community members, government agencies, nonprofits, farmers, and food system stakeholders to develop policy, systems, and environmental strategies supporting a healthy local food system, community, and economy.
Originally founded in 1994 and reconvened in 2012 with support from the Marin County Board of Supervisors and the Marin Community Foundation, the Council identified equitable access to healthy and local food in Marin City, the Canal neighborhood in San Rafael, and West Marin as a top priority. This report outlines the challenges, opportunities, and possible policy solutions the Council identified through community food security assessment tours, expert testimony, and focused discussion — noting that despite Marin’s reputation as the healthiest county in the country, roughly 1 in 5 residents is at risk of hunger.
